When I was reading on page 2 the reading talked about semiotics. In my Communication Theory class we talked about this form of communication. I refreshed my memory when reading this. The theory talks about signs and symbols that people use to communicate. On page three is when we first see the question about “is playing video games a waste of time?” We are seeing that possibly we are less literate when playing these games because talking is not required. Older people then in turn think that these are a waste of time. I like the story about the six year old playing the video game. His grandfather did not think this was helping with his literacy skills, just his hand-eye coordination. I think some video games are beneficial to children. As I was reading I kept thinking about the shooting games. Then on page six the article talks about the violent games and if kids would be into other forms of violence because of playing them. I do not think kids would be into violence from playing video games; however some have the wrong messages.
Literacy and Technology linked talked about how technology should be used in the classroom. It also talked about the correlation between race and income with computer use. It basically says that the lower the education level the less likely they will get a high paying job in the computer field. I like the part about schools needing computers to teach kids “marketable skills.” I think kids need these skills more then ever now. Think about it? The kids of this generation have so much computer knowledge (all educational) then we ever had when we were in grade school. My cousins know so much about how to operate a computer, more then I ever knew at their age.
